Upgrading of Cogmans kloof Pass between Ashton and Montagu
(Ashton Tied-Arch Bridge)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The original bridge across the Cogmans Kloof River, located on the R60 in Ashton, was built in the 1930’s. An assessment of the bridge determined that it had reached the end of its service life, required widening and had inadequate hydraulic capacity.

The new Ashton tied-arch bridge, replaced the original bridge and was designed and built to improve traffic capacity, pedestrian safety and hydraulic capacity to accommodate major floods.

It is South Africa’s first concrete tied arch bridge constructed using a transverse launching method, to minimize traffic disruptions during construction. Mowana Engineers personnel were instrumental in the design of the bridge.
