The three partners worked for a company that was bought over by a large international consultant. With time, the ethos changed with a loss of sense of place and value. The partners founded Mowana Engineers to provide a personalised service for their clients and to create an environment where the staff feel nurtured and encouraged to grow.

Mowana is the Tswana word for the Baobab tree. There are many stories and legends surrounding the baobab tree. One legend holds that when God planted the first baobab tree, it was so full of energy that it kept moving! So, God decided to uproot it and replant it upside down to make sure it stays in one place. Ever since then, its root-like branches have been reaching up into the African sky.

The Baobab tree is a tree of exceptional vitality and endurance. For many communities in South Africa, it is a place where people gather for shelter, provision (“super” fruit and water), protection, and to meet - a landmark that is symbolic of stability. The resilience, service and symbolism of the Baobab tree resonate within Mowana Engineers, calling on us to reflect the purpose for which God created the Baobab tree.

Mowana Engineers strives to grow strong roots in Africa and, like the Baobab, also referred to as the “Tree of Life”, personifies stability, growth, and endurance as well as being a provider of shelter and a gathering place for our staff.

Our name and logo project us as a truly South African company. In addition to being firmly rooted in African soil, the roots in our logo represent our core values upon which our company is built. The roots, in turn, feed into the trunk of the tree that represents the Culture of our company. The branches symbolise our different practice areas, whilst simultaneously representing growth and the ability to bear “super fruits” that are unique only to the Baobab tree. Synonymous with the Baobab being a place to gather and therefore being called the “Listening Tree”, Mowana Engineers strives to be a place where we gather to nurture stability for our personnel and clients and alignment with all involved, while encouraging initiative, creativity and excellence.
