SANRAL STRATEGIC BRIDGE INSPECTIONS ON THE N2 EASTERN CAPE

CLIENT: SANRAL SOC LTD CONSULTING ENGINEER: MOWANA ENGINEERS (PTY) LTD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ELEMENT CONSULTING ENGINEERS (PTY) LTD

Mowana Engineers, in partnership with Element Consulting Engineers, were appointed by SANRAL SOC Ltd to visually inspect and report on several strategic bridges located on the N2 route between Nature’s Valley and Jeffrey’s Bay. This route through the Eastern Cape is characterised by indigenous forest and several major river crossings over deep gorges.

The strategic bridges that were inspected included the Elands River, Gamtoos River, Witteklip River and the impressive Storms River crossings. The mountainous landscape made access to these prominent bridges difficult and an Under-Bridge Inspection Unit (UBIU) was required to gain access to bridge elements that would otherwise have been impossible to inspect.

In accordance to SANRAL’s requirements, only Certified Senior Bridge Inspectors are allowed to inspect major bridges of strategic importance.   The team from Mowana Engineers, led by Edward Smuts (Pr Eng), used the UBIU to conduct visual inspections of the bridges.   Inventory, inspection data and photographic records were logged for each bridge and captured onto SANRAL’s Bridge Management System.

The Bridge Management System provides relevant and up-to-date information allowing SANRAL to effectively manage and prioritise maintenance or construction activities to prevent premature deterioration while ensuring public safety.
