REPLACEMENT OF EXPANSION JOINTS AND BEARINGS OF STRATEGIC BRIDGES IN THE WESTERN CAPE

CLIENT: SANRAL SOC LTD CONSULTING ENGINEERS: MOWANA ENGINEERS (PTY) LTD CONTRACTOR: EMPA STRUCTURES

The Stellenberg-, Swartklip Interchange bridges and the Gouritz River Bridge were completed between the late 1970’s and 1990.

The expansion joints and bearings of these bridges are approaching the end of their service life and require replacement, with difficult access to these structural components being a major challenge.   These bridges are located on some of the busiest routes in the Western Cape, which pose interesting traffic engineering and accommodation of traffic challenges to ensure the public’s safety at all times with minimal impact on traffic flow during construction.

The aim of the project is to replace the existing bridge expansion joints and bearings with new ones to ensure the extended functionality of these strategic bridges.  This required specialist bridge- and transportation engineering contributions to arrive at structurally sound solutions, using the latest design codes and structural analysis software to accurately predict the static and dynamic behaviour of the bridges.

Mowana Engineers completed the designs and together with the rest of the team endeavours to have minimal impact on the daily traffic routine of Capetonians during the construction phase of the project.
